POST-SOVIET TRANSITION OF BURYAT ETHNICITY:

FROM SOVEREIGNTY TO A NEW TRADITIONALISM

Varnavsky Pavel Kondratievich – Candidate of Historical Sciences, Senior Researcher of the Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Ulan-Ude, Russia). E-mail: WPK1@mail.ru.

The article examines the transformation of Buryat ethnicity discourse in the post-Soviet period. The author identi

fies two stages: the 1990s – a political-mobilization stage marked by ethno-political organizations, demands for sovereignty, parity representation, and territorial rehabilitation; and from the early 2000s – the depoliticization of ethnicity, with a shift towards cultural practices, festivals, and the “invention of traditions”. It is shown how state institutions take the initiative from ethno-nationalists, constructing ethnicity within the framework of multiculturalism and regional identity, thereby fostering positive consolidation of the polyethnic community without conflict potential.
