EXPERIENCE OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ULAN-UDE

to the practice of learning foreign languages, but the extent and nature of their use by students of different age groups remain poorly understood. This article compares the global capabilities of using AI tools in learning English with the real–life experience of high school students in Ulan-Ude. Based on an analytical review of the literature and an expert assessment grounded in the author’s firsthand experience with AI tools, three potential behavioral models of AI users (passive, active, advanced) were identified and used as the basis for the questionnaire. The empirical base of the study comprised data from a sociological survey of high school students in Ulan-Ude (two-stage cluster sampling, total number of respondents: 594). The survey results indicate that high school students do not fully realize the existing capabilities of AI tools. The findings also reveal a discrepancy between the behavioral model actually dominant in this group – the active user model (AI as an auxiliary tool) – and the respondents’ motivational self-identification as advanced users (AI as a learning agent facilitating self-development). This discrepancy is interpreted as a symptom of an insufficiently developed holistic culture of academic AI use among high school students.
